A kitchen fire caused a scare in the Westwinds Apartments located on Oakwood Avenue on the north end of the city of North Bay.

Fire officials say they arrived at the scene in less than 5 minutes after the initial fire call which came in just after 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

"Firefighters were here in two minutes, we got the fire knocked down very, very quickly nobody was hurt thankfully," said Greg Saunders, North Bay's deputy fire chief.

"The building was successfully evacuated."

The West Winds Apartments are operated by PHARA, short for "Physically Handicapped Adults Rehabilitation Association."  The six-story apartment complex includes a total of 60 units.

Saunders says they followed safety protocols as the tenants here take part in annual fire drills in case of situations just like this.

"It is a little bit of a different concern because we term this a vulnerable occupancy and that means there are people that live there that have vulnerabilities so when we get a call like this it is one that gets our heart racing a little bit but thankfully no one was injured," explained Saunders.

"We got the fire knocked down. There is some smoke damage, we are clearing out the smoke right now and we anticipate the residents will get back into the building very shortly."
