The East Ferris Fire Department has changed its name to East Ferris Fire and Emergency Services. With the new name comes a new logo as well, chosen by the Fire and Emergency Services Committee at its May 5 meeting and approved by East Ferris council this past Tuesday.
“This better represents the fire service,” explained councillor Steve Trahan, who also sits on the Fire and Emergency Services Committee. “They do a lot more than just fire services within the community.”
The new logo incorporates the East Ferris municipal logo, which marks a historic first. East Ferris’ Chief Administrative Officer, Jason Trottier, mentioned “it’s the first time that our logo has been incorporated into the fire department’s.”
Trottier added that implementing the new logo will cost about $2,500, which includes updating the fleet’s decals.
Historians might notice the bugle is absent from the new design. The bugle, also referred to as a speaking trumpet, was once used by fire officers to send commands on the fire ground before handheld radios were standard issue. It wasn’t a musical instrument. Think of it as an early version of the megaphone.
Trahan explained that since this practice is no longer used, the committee decided to remove it from the new logo. However, the bugle symbol lives on, still used to designate an officer’s rank.
“This is much more modern,” Trottier said of the logo. Trahan noted that the fire fighters were consulted as well, and “they were all happy with it.”
“I think the name change is excellent as well,” noted Mayor Pauline Rochefort.
