Erika Lougheed, a municipal councillor in East Ferris, will be confirmed by acclamation as the 2022 New Democrat candidate for Nipissing during a meeting Saturday.

“I am excited to join Andrea Horwath’s team, and to stand up together for the people of Nipissing. A New Democratic government will put our priorities first, from investing in public health care, long-term care, and schools, to creating more homes people can afford in our region, and creating more good jobs here – the kind of jobs you can raise a family on,” said Lougheed.

As municipal councillor in East Ferris who works at Nipissing University, she believes passionately that residents of this region need a government that is committed to Northern priorities to get much-needed services and investments.

“The Ford Conservatives are making things worse after 15 years of Liberal cuts to northern services. During this pandemic, and as we recover, we can’t leave northerners behind, and we definitely can’t leave northern families and small businesses at risk of more cuts," said Lougheed. “Doug Ford and his Conservative MPPs have refused to reverse cuts to the public services we depend on, putting patients and staff at risk in hospitals, jeopardizing the safety of students and staff at schools, and tragically failing to protect seniors in long-term care."

France Gélinas, long-standing MPP for Nickel Belt and NDP Health critic, will join the nomination meeting, which will be held online Saturday.

“Northern New Democrats need Erika on our team,” said Gélinas. “Together we will ensure that northern Ontario finally gets the services and investments we need.”
