Mattawa’s water treatment plant at 400 Bissett Street is looking a little rough these days.

Dexture Sarrazin, the town’s Director of Community Services, detailed, “The parapet wall has been without soffit, the shingles are beyond the end of life and there are a number of air and water gaps that allow for critter access.”

Rest assured said critters have no effect on water treatment, but it’s never good to have uninvited guests in one’s building, so council has decided to put an end to that.

Repairs are on the way. At the last council meeting, JLF Exteriors, a Mattawa business, was awarded the contract for the work after three companies responded to the town’s request for proposals. The quote was for $6,774 for the necessary work.

What’s to be done?

The parapet wall will be repaired with tin siding, and the shingles will be removed. It’s a flat roof system, Sarrazin added, “And the roof is in good shape.” Only the parapet needs repair. “It will be steel instead of shingles, and the soffit will be finished so it will be sealed up.”

Sarrazin concluded, “It’s a repair that needs to happen sooner rather than later.”
