Albany Benson is an inspiring young leader in every sense of the word.
The grade 12 student at Chippewa Secondary is deeply involved in a number of charity initiatives. Her drive to help others and dedication to making a change for her community is admirable.
“I’m really proud of the work that I’ve done but I never thought it would go this far. I’m really grateful for this award,” Benson shared when she was told about her Community Builder Awards win.
“It means a lot to me because it shows me how much we can do when we work together. It wasn’t just me, it was everyone who contributed and was involved,” she said.
Her history of community involvement includes raising money for the food bank and organizing events for Indigenous students at school. Most notably, Benson spearheaded the collection of essential items for infants to send to families in need in Fort Albany. Thousands of diapers were collected and delivered to the remote First Nations community.
Benson also helps to lead the Indigenous Youth Circle and serves as the Indigenous Youth Trustee on the Near North District School Board.
The 17-year-old intends to start her post-secondary education in the fall, taking Indigenous Studies at Nipissing University.
"I really aim to inspire other youth to take action and take part in initiatives,” she added. “I hope to continue my role as a youth leader in university.”
The Young Leader Award is presented to an individual or group under the age of 25 who is actively involved in worthwhile community service and shows a commitment to making the community a better place for others.
Congratulations, Albany!
