Collision uncovers contraband cigarettes

Mattawa OPP seized over 1800 cartons of contraband cigarettes on Friday, November 28th, 2008 as a result of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Calvin Township, Ontario.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., Mattawa OPP officers were conducting routine traffic patrol when they observed a cube van lodged in a snow bank. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the vehicle contained 1800 packages of contraband with an estimated value of $50,000.00.

Investigation will be ongoing with Ministry of Revenue.

Charged is Clifford SUMMERS, 48 years old, of Gatineau, Quebec with one count of Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes and one count of Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes for the Purpose of Sale, under the Tobacco Tax Act. SUMMERS is to appear in Mattawa for Court on February 27th, 2009.
