On Thursday June 5th, students of Chippewa Secondary School got a chance to exercise their right to vote in the provincial election!
They were part of a provincial project called Student Vote that is designed for students under the voting age. Students learned about the democratic process, party platforms and local candidates, and then had an authentic in-school vote where students took on the roles of election officials.
At Chippewa, it was a great success and there was excitement surrounding the chance to vote in an election.
Overall, over 210 students headed to the polling station to cast their vote!
Identical to the official election process, students had the opportunity to vote on the local candidates running in their electoral district.
The ballots will now be counted by each participating school, and released publicly on election night and shared with media for broadcast and publication.
The goal is to have 200,000 Ontario students, aged 17 and under, cast their vote for our provincial candidates.
Chippewa’s election results will be kept top secret until after our provincial election, at which point, all Student Vote results will be released and made clear to Chippewa Raider students during morning announcements.
