On November 21, at approximately 8 a.m., Powassan OPP officers responded to a collision involving a school bus and sports utility vehicle.
Preliminary investigation showed that the school bus was travelling southbound on Highway 654 when the SUV slid through a stop sign on Tillicum Bay Road, hitting the school bus.
One passenger on school bus received minor injuries.
Michelle Thornton had two children on that bus.
She wrote in the comments section that, "The roads were just not nice. My two kids were on the bus. My son watched the jeep slide through the stop sign and t-bone the bus. He cracked his head pretty good against the window. My daughter was across the aisle and was dozing. She flew and landed on the floor. One girl got a cut on her forehead and was taken right to the hospital.
"The other kids were all taken to their respective schools and the principal called me and suggested I take mine to the hospital. They are bruised and will be sore tomorrow, but are fine. What a morning!"
Stephen Cripps also had a child on the bus.
"It was my daughter that had to go to the hospital. She will be fine. A few stitches and a black eye. All in all, everyone involved was lucky. Clearly, traveling too fast for the weather conditions played a role in the accident. But is not my major concern. The rain we received Saturday rapidly froze and it began to snow that evening. It continued to snow most of Sunday through Monday morning. Why had the municipality of Callander not been out to sand it's secondary road intersections with more than 36 hours of lead time to the Monday morning commute. Highway #654 was in decent shape as it was plowed and salted. The MTO and their contracted cronies had done their job. In my eyes, it is the Callander municipal works managers that dropped the ball...."
The investigation is ongoing.
