Canadore opens brand new fitness facility

'We have a small fitness gym here and a lot of students said this is something they really need but they really needed something else to help get that stress out so when they are here they have access'

Canadore College has three campuses in North Bay.

Each campus had a fitness centre, but the main campus ironically had the smallest fitness area out of the trio of campuses in North Bay.

But that all ended today.

This morning Canadore College unveiled its brand new athletics facility to the students and the community.

The new gym is taking over the former “Wall” campus bar and restaurant location.

And it is impressive.

The long-awaited 4,000 sq. ft. facility features state-of-the-art equipment selected to support elite student-athlete performance training as well as meeting the needs of users looking to generally improve their physical fitness levels.

The Panthers Fitness Facility renovations at the former Wall location, totaled $1 million, with $550,000 having been donated by the Canadore Students’ Council.

Robin Chokomolin, the President of the Canadore College Student Council, feels the new fitness area is a need that students will embrace while allowing them to stay on campus to work out instead of using off-site discount gyms across the city.

“We have a small fitness gym here and a lot of students said this is something they really need but they really needed something else to help get that stress out so when they are here they have access,” she said.

“A lot of students I know and that I talked to often used Fit-For-Less because it was cheap and not expensive for them to use and it is close but many did use the gym here between classes but now that they have something here it is something that is free, they don’t have to pay for it and they will be able to use it more often.”

Shawn Chorney, VP at Canadore College, says the facility will create a handful of jobs on campus including a position that will be filled soon.

“We are adding today not only a wonderful space but it is versatile and something the students can use and we are adding a life health coach to the facility as well to support our students in their planning,” said Chorney.
