Business owner casting net for slippery minnow thieves

'You are trying to do what you can for the fishermen and the community and you get bad apples like this that come around and just ruin it for others, it is bad in a way'

Security camera footage of an individual allegedly responsible for multiple minnow thefts this week at Bob's Bait and Tackle in North Bay.

Dan Biszak, owner of Bob's Bait and Tackle, believes he has a lot of trust with his clients.

Biszak, who has been running the business for three years, allows customers to pick up minnows after hours and they come back during the next day to pay.

He says it goes by an honour system.

However, that system has hit a snag recently as he says two nights this week, individuals are cleaning out his fridge full of minnows.

"It seems every year we get least one like this that comes on a regular basis until we actually catch them and have a chat with them or speak through the camera and then they usually go away," explained Biszak who has installed security cameras outside the business.

"This guy, the past two nights, first night he took three dozen minnows and then two dozen minnows but that's all that was left in the fridge so I am sure he would have taken more.

"They know I have cameras because they park on the road, they don't pull into the driveway so I don't get their plates and it's the same guys, the passenger jumping out and grabbing it."

Biszak admits the thief got away with less than $100 in minnows. He did not report the minnow theft to police as he could not get the thieves license plate number off his security camera feed.

He shared the security camera photos on social media this week in hopes of ending this fishy business.

"I hope everyone can make him Facebook famous," Biszak stated on his post.

"It is kind of sad because we do it for the fishing community that want to go out early or later in the evening and they stay out all night in their huts so we have to provide a service to them so they are able to come any time of the night and take what they need," said Biszak, whose business is located on Lakeshore Drive in North Bay.

Biszak is disappointed as he takes pride in giving back to the community by sponsoring sports teams and events around the area.

"It is not about the money it just bothers you when somebody steals from you, it kind of hurts in a sense," he said..

"You are trying to help, you are trying to do what you can for the fishermen and the community and you get bad apples like this that come around and just ruin it for others, it is bad in a way."

He has this message for the slippery thieves.

"I would tell him you are stealing from a family, we are not a big corporation, this is our livelihood, it is the only source of income that we have and any extra money we have we always give back and it is just sad to see people doing this, small businesses especially as it is not easy to make a living these days," said Biszak.
