Body Found Nov. 12 on Lake Superior Island Now Identified

On Tuesday November 21st, 2006 Superior East (Wawa) OPP with the assistance of North East Region Crime Unit and North East Region Forensic Identification Unit made positive identification on a body that was discovered partially decomposed on the Shore of Montreal Island on Sunday November 12th, 2006.

The deceased female was identified as Margaret R. Martin Prunty Handrich, age 60 yrs. from Laramie, Wyoming. Identification was obtained through dental records. Mrs. Handrich succumbed to hypothermia/drowning.

Mrs. Handrich went missing with her husband and father-in-law after their fishing boat capsized in heavy seas on Lake Superior on October 6, 2006 near Grand Marais, Michigan. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a fourth person on Saturday October 7th, 2006 after he spent nearly 14 hours clinging to the overturned hull in 12 degree C (55-degree F) water.

Still missing is the boat owner Willard Handrich, age 90 of Grand Marias, and his son Eldon Handrich, age 59 of Laramie, Wyoming. Superior East OPP with the assistance of North East Region Crime Unit will attempt to conduct aerial searches of the Lake Superior shoreline for any sign of the two missing men.
