Canadian Blood Services, North Bay announces immediate need for type O blood
Sudbury – With an “immediate need” for type O blood, Canadian Blood Services is urging residents of North Bay to book an appointment to donate.
The immediate need for type O blood is fueled by a variety of factors including an increase in surgeries being performed after the holiday break, transplants using a higher amount of blood and increased traumas in hospitals. Also impacting the supply of type O blood are winter illnesses which have prevented some regular donors from giving and bad weather across the country which has cancelled clinics.
“There is a good possibility that people who do not know their blood type are in fact type O since that covers 46 per cent of the population,” says Frances Sawdon, Canadian Blood Services Centre Director in Sudbury. “Whether you know your blood type or not, we ask that you book an appointment to donate.”
Even more important, O negative blood can be given to patients of any blood group. Called the universal blood type, it is the only blood type that is compatible with all others. It is also the most heavily used in emergency situations.
Donor clinic hours in North Bay at the Elks Lodge:
Wednesday, February 4 and Thursday, February 5 from 12 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. & 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
