The OPP warn area residents of a Mystery Shopper Scam that has recently surfaced in our area. The scammers use free, online classified websites, to recruit potential victims to become mystery shoppers.

On April 12 the OPP received a complaint of an online Mystery Shopper scam.

The victim answered an online ad from the Mystery Global Survey Group. The scammer then sends a letter and a cheque to the victim. The victim is told to deposit the cheque and keep a portion as payment. The remaining funds are to be used to wire transfer to companies to test the company’s procedures and customer service skills.

Luckily for the victim in this case, the Canada Post employee warned the victim of the possible scam. The victim returned to the bank and management confirmed that the check was a fictitious cheque. In this scam the victim did not lose any money.

The scams have many different approaches; however the goals of the scammers are generally the same…to steal your money!
