Anishinabek now has control over on-reserve education from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 effective April 1.

"It's an exciting time," Kelly Crawford, Director of Education told CKAT. "The agreement was negotiated for 23 years with the federal government so it's definitely a day that many people have put a lot of work into.

"Our communities have been very much looking forward to being able to take this new step and to be able to make real advancements in Anishinabek student success, increase our graduation rate and looking at the development of culturally relevant curriculum and programs and having control of administration funding."

The Kinoomaadziwin Education Body (KEB) is a not-for-profit corporation and has a 12-member Board of Directors that is comprised of representatives from the four Anishinabek Regional Education Councils.
