A Christmas tradition, the 77th annual Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon is set for tomorrow (Saturday).
The telethon, which delivers Christmas cheer to communities outside North Bay, will be broadcast live from noon to 7 p.m. on YourTV, channel 12 and streamed online here.
“We’re live on TV and through live streaming. Our goal is to reach out to everyone willing to lend a helping hand,” stated Vern Presse, Board President of the Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon.
Presse, who has been with the Lions Club for 23 years, emphasizes the various ways people can contribute, including calling in pledges, e-transfers, and online donations.
He says the funds raised are crucial for the holiday season.
“We provide Christmas gifts for children, turkeys, and hams for families. It's about giving those up to 13 years old a gift, and for older children, gift cards,” Presse explained.
Last year, the telethon helped over 400 families, but with economic challenges, members anticipate the need to support around 700 families this year.
The telethon, a 100 per cent volunteer-run event, has a fundraising goal of $25,000 to $35,000 to meet the growing needs.

“Think about how you would feel without anything for Christmas. We’re fortunate and need to help those less so,” Presse remarked, highlighting the importance of community support.
An integral part of the telethon’s success is its collaboration with local organizations and volunteers. Thanks to them, toys and gifts are collected and distributed across various towns.
The event will also feature pre-recorded entertainment acts and visits to multiple locations around the city by the emcees.
“It’s a big deal with lots of people working in the background who deserve our thanks,” said Presse, acknowledging the unsung heroes who make the telethon possible.
As the telethon marks its 77th year, having started in 1946, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of giving in the community. For many years, it was produced in the CTV studio on Oak St. which has since shut down.
“It's a great way to put a smile on children’s faces at Christmas time,” Presse concluded, inviting everyone to be a part of this heartwarming tradition.
