Editor's note: Mr. Wilkinson writes in response to a previous letter, The pandemic will only end with more trust and less hatred.
-----
The recent letter saying let's not hate each other over vaccines was discouraging.
I don't hate anti-vaxxers but think them misinformed, and also selfish. They're not being vaccinated and it causes more deaths than necessary, both for them and for others.
The letter says more vaccinated people are catching Covid than unvaccinated ones, without pointing out that that there are four times as many people who have had their shots, or that they have much milder symptoms.
Much more relevant is the fact that an unvaccinated person is four times as likely to have to be hospitalised, and nine times more likely to end up in an ICU bed.
That hurts not just the person who didn't get the vaccine but also all the people who need to get into the hospital for treatment for cancer and other serious problems. That is the selfish bit.
It is true that vaccination is not a cure-all, but it is the best defence we have now. Covid is not going away but it can be tamed if we all stand together against it.
