FRENCH RIVER, Ont. — The Ontario Provincial Police charged a driver with stunt driving in the late evening hours.
On January 7, 2025, at approximately 11:55 p.m., the Nipissing West (Noelville) Detachment of the OPP stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 69 near French River.
The vehicle was travelling at a speed of 168 kilometres per hour in a posted 110 km/h zone.
As a result of the investigation, the 21-year-old driver from Sturgeon Falls was charged with:
- Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt - excessive speed
The driver was issued a 30-day Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The OPP would like to advise motorists that driving at night presents unique challenges for all road users:
- Limited Visibility: At night, your reaction time is reduced. Speeding limits your ability to see and react to hazards, such as wildlife, pedestrians, or debris on the road.
- Longer Stopping Distance: Higher speeds mean longer stopping distances. Give yourself time to react to unexpected situations.
- Drowsy Driving Risks: Fatigue is more common at night. Coupled with speeding, it can lead to catastrophic consequences.
- Obey the Speed Limit: Speed limits are set for ideal conditions. At night, slower speeds may be necessary.
- Use High Beams Responsibly: When appropriate, use high beams to improve visibility but dim them for oncoming traffic.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and take breaks if you are tired.
- Be Extra Vigilant: Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife that may be harder to see.
The OPP says, "Speeding in the dark does not just put you at risk, it endangers everyone on the road. Let us work together to keep our roads safe."
