BayToday reached out to all 29 candidates running for city council in North Bay. These folks have been to the meet and greet events, read and heard about each other's platforms, and interacted with their fellow candidates in person and online. They have the inside advantage, who better to be the subjects of an informal and unscientific pre-election experiment?

We asked the candidates: After you tick the X next to your name, who are the three candidates you will vote for and would most like to serve alongside?

The candidates were all guaranteed anonymity in exchange for their responses and some also provided the reasoning for their choices. We received responses from 19 of the 29 candidates. One mention equals one vote, regardless of the order listed in each candidate's top three. Please find the results below, only those receiving votes are listed. For a full list of candidates, click here.

Candidates' choices for North Bay city councillor:

  • Lana Mitchell 9 votes
  • Jamie Lowery 5
  • Derek Shogren 5
  • Mac Bain 4
  • Maggie Horsfield 4
  • Justine Mallah 4
  • Lance Darnell 3
  • Gary Gardiner 3
  • Darryl Skinner 3
  • Scott Kile 2
  • Mark King 2
  • Chris Mayne 2
  • Michael Taylor 2
  • Randall Tilander 2
  • Sara Inch 1
  • Tanya Vrebosch 2
  • Dave Mendicino 1
  • Deric Reichstein 1
  • Ed Valenti 1
  • Bill Vrebosch 1

What is the reasoning behind the selections?

  • Mark King: he chairs the most difficult and important board which is DNSSAB. We need Mark to continue to lead this board.  Homelessness, subsidized housing, low barrier shelter, and the Northern Pines transitional housing are all important projects that are now more important than ever.
  • Derek Shogren: skill sets are financial literacy, human resources, past member of Council always willing to engage citizens that presented at council
  • Jamie Lowery: skill sets are financial literacy, proven ability to work well with unions, and extensive background in municipal administration (Brampton)
  • Michael Taylor: of all the candidates for city council, he is the one most actuated by the public good.
  • Lance Darnell: he is a bundle of positive energy.
  • Justine Mallah: very passionate about the underprivileged.
  • Dave Mendicino has a strong relationship with the DIA and the property owners downtown and a good relationship with the building community.
  • Derek Shogren has a strong relationship with the Business community and the chamber and is also great at budget time.
  • Lana Mitchell has fought in the trenches for three decades and will be able to guide the next Council and staff through the next four years.
  • Jamie Lowery: I like his platform and his experience and ideas and commitment to our community.
  • Maggie Horsfield: I like her platform, knowledge and enthusiasm Maggie brings to the table.
  • Darryl Skinner: I like his platform, his experience in municipal politics (prior to moving to North Bay) and his commitment to helping charity groups in our community.
  • I am hoping North Bay moves towards a complete overhaul of the existing council I still believe having some experience at the table is valuable. Both Darryl Skinner and Jamie Lowery bring that experience and could lend a voice to reason.
  • Maggie Horsfield's passion was contagious and that is such a great tool to have when you are needing others to buy into your ideas.
  • I can work with any of the candidates!

Online voting has been open since Oct. 13 and runs until Election Day on Monday, Oct. 24. Eligible voters can vote from anywhere using any computer, tablet or smartphone. Advance voting is now closed. The City has introduced five Super Polls for in-person voting that are strategically located throughout all areas of the city at which any eligible elector will be able to cast their ballot on Election Day. Special polls will continue to be held at nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
