In an ever-growing population of seniors and the increasing need for care, organizations like Paramed are playing a crucial role in reimagining the way individuals receive support. Rather than confining seniors to institutional settings, Paramed offers personalized care in the comfort of their own homes, with a focus on maintaining a high level of independence and a strong support system.

"Out of nursing and retirement homes, as well as hospitals, community care providers play a very large role in our healthcare system, especially with the growing need," explains Stephen Keetch, Manager of Talent Acquisition at Paramed. "Without home care, we see nursing homes, retirement homes, and hospitals becoming overwhelmed with long waitlists. Providing care in the home is a much more accessible and efficient solution."

Paramed's home care services cater to individuals who can still live at home with some level of independence.

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Home Support Workers (HSWs) assist these individuals in various activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and household tasks. They also provide comfort and support during end-of-life care and offer respite care for caregivers.

"When it comes to home care, individuals are somewhat ambulatory and can still move around with assistance, but they may need help with tasks like dressing, meal preparation, or getting in and out of bed," says Keetch, explaining the role of PSWs and HSWs. "Our caregivers also play a crucial role in providing comfort and assistance during end-of-life care."

Joining Paramed as a caregiver offers numerous benefits compared to traditional healthcare settings. The autonomy and one-on-one care provided in the community create a unique and rewarding experience.

"I love getting up in the morning. I love going to see my clients," shares Ed, an HSW at Paramed. "I feel like part of their family. I have clients that call me their son."

Erin, a PSW at Paramed, emphasizes the importance of compassion and flexibility in this line of work. "You must be compassionate. These are people. And they've had their lives," says Erin. "You must be able to adjust to how they want to take care of themselves for the rest of their lives. You need to be flexible."

These dedicated caregivers form strong connections with their clients and bring immense satisfaction to their daily work. Pamela, a community nurse at Paramed, highlights the significance of listening and collaboration in providing patient-centred care.

"Listening is one of the key things in nursing. That contact with that person, that's vital," says Pamela. "You've got to have that person on board with you and work together. When you work together, you get a good outcome. That's my satisfaction."

Paramed ensures that all caregivers receive detailed orientation and training, followed by shadowing experienced workers to develop their skills and establish a rhythm in their caregiving routines. Whether individuals are already certified PSWs or nurses or are in the process of completing their education, Paramed offers opportunities for them to join their team.

By providing care in the home, Paramed helps alleviate the strain on healthcare facilities and allows seniors to age gracefully in their preferred environment. The personalized attention and companionship offered by Paramed's caregivers bring a sense of comfort and familiarity to their clients.

As the need for home care continues to rise, organizations like Paramed play a vital role in ensuring the well-being and quality of life for seniors in our communities. Through their dedication and compassionate approach, Paramed's caregivers truly make a difference in the lives of those they serve.
