Jordan Fitger had the game’s first and final goals, and supplied an assist in between, to help lead the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 5-3 win over the Powassan Voodoos Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Striking first, Kirkland Lake got on the board 3:33 into the match-up when Aaron Leenaars fired a feed in front from below the goal line that found Fitger, who whipped it through Powassan starter Austin Seibel.

Tying it up, the Voodoos controlled a face-off that led to Dawson Coleman snapping an attempt from the point that clipped off the stick of the Gold Miners forward en route to the net, skipped, then eventually found its way in, with it being credited to Anthony Boyes, who was parked on top of netminder Mason Janicki.

Still knotted at one into the second stanza, the Gold Miners reversed roles to put them back on top when Fitger sent a backhand out from the end boards that was quickly swatted in by Leenaars, midway through the frame.

Pulling even five minutes into the third, Powassan’s Justin Rousseau found Caden Kowal driving down the slot with a pass that he collected and wired by Janicki.

A third lead for Kirkland Lake came midway through the period when Mason Brownlee snagged an errant Voodoos’ pass and fed Nicolas Saucier, who neatly redirected it by Seibel.

Going up by two on a man advantage, the Gold Miners’ Inde Abresch cranked in a one-timer with four minutes remaining to give him 11 points in his past dozen contests.

Pulling back to within one, Marcus Krats took a spinning back pass from Kowal and fired it five-hole with 2:22 to go.

However, Fitger completed his multi-point effort with an empty netter from centre ice to help secure the road victory in rounding out the scoring.
