A couple of second period markers sent the Powassan Voodoos on their way to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Blind River Beavers Tuesday as part of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

First-year Blind River forward Noah Szczurek began the scoring eight minutes into the match-up with his initial league tally that saw him take a feed from behind the net on the right side and snap a shot that leaked through Powassan’s Miles Gordon.

Remaining that way into the middle stanza, the Voodoos drew level at 8:06 thanks to Anthony Boyes, who outraced and negated an icing call with his efforts forcing some additional pressure which allowed Riley Misa to spin and send a backhand through the crease that Boyes banged in on Beavers’ netminder Bronx Bodnar.

Splitting the goaltending duties, Tyson Wilcox came in for Powassan midway through the proceedings.

The Voodoos then went on to take the lead deep in the frame when Justin Rousseau lifted a backhand over Bodnar’s pad while battling in front.

Into the third period they went where it remained with the same scoreline throughout.

Blind River did have a late power play and with their netminder out for an additional skater, they had chances to tie it, but Wilcox shut the door to preserve the win.

The outcome sees Powassan improve to 2-4-0-0 on the season while Blind River slipped to 4-2-1-0 with the narrow defeat.
