Continuing to impress, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Greater Sudbury Cubs added another win to their totals in downing the Powassan Voodoos 6-2 Thursday at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Greater Sudbury got going early, converting on the night’s initial man advantage opportunity, four and a half minutes into the contest.

On the tally, Ben Harris won a draw to Daks Klinkhammer on the side boards who circled up top and whipped a shot from distance past Powassan netminder Tyson Wilcox.

The marker sees Klinkhammer extend a point streak to six in succession.

Up a skater once more, the Cubs increased their lead 10 minutes later as Lucas Signoretti fired a low attempt to the net that was steered in by Nolan Newton.

Dating back to last season, Newton has points in his past 11 NOJHL outings, while with the second assist, Samuel Assinewai is now on a nine-game heater for the NOJHL front-runners.

Continuing to press, the home side added a third in the session when Jacob Lamoureux lifted in a close-range backhand at 16:41.

The Voodoos did get one prior to the intermission, thanks to Riley Misa snapping a shot from the right circle, after a face-off win by teammate Owen Kahl, that got under Greater Sudbury goaltender Stephen Toltl.

In the middle frame, Klinkhammer collected his second of the night by batting in a puck out of mid-air off a left point attempt from defenceman Gabriel Grobanopoulos, half-way through the match-up.

Notching a buzzer-beater at 19:59, the Cubs’ Cameron Shanks pumped a shot towards the target that clipped off Newton and into the net, a fraction before the period was set to expire.

Heading to the third, the clubs traded tallies in the ninth minute of the stanza.

After Samuel Rivet sent in a knuckler from inside the blueline during a Voodoos’ power play at 9:06, Lucas Signoretti tipped in a Jacob Signoretti chance moments later to give him 23 goals on the campaign, which leads the NOJHL.

That proved to be the evening’s final marker as Greater Sudbury skated away with their league-best 11th home victory, while raising their overall record to 21-2-1-1.

In defeat, the Voodoos fall to 10-10-0-3.

The Voodoos are back in action Sunday when they travel to Massey to face the Elliot Lake Vikings.
