Voodoos blanked by Cubs

All business from the onset, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading Greater Sudbury Cubs scored five times and saw newcomer Steven Toltl post a shutout in his debut as part of a 5-0 victory over the Powassan Voodoos Saturday match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Greater Sudbury were quick to strike in this one as defenceman Kyle Navarro made a nice move around a Powassan player and fired a shot that was redirected in by Lucas Signoretti for his 21st tally of the season, just 1:41 into the proceedings.

The Cubs continued to press the pace the remainder of the frame, but Voodoos’ starter Austin Seibel kept the visitors to just one goal in the session.

Not letting up, the visitors went ahead 2-0 early in the second stanza when Nolan Newton took a cross-ice pass from Samuel Assinewai then drove into the slot and fired an attempt into the back of the net.

With the assist, Assinewai now has at least one point in eight consecutive outings, while dating back to last season, Newton has etched his name on the game sheet in his past 10 appearances for Greater Sudbury.

The Cubs kept coming and added another thanks to another from Signoretti as he went to the high slot and wired in his league-best 22nd.

Going up a skater, Greater Sudbury notched another with Assinewai firing one through traffic to give him 16 goals on the season.

Taking their extended cushion to the third period, Spencer Horgan helped finish off the road result as he went in on Seibel, made a move to his left, and lifted in a close-range backhand to round out the scoring.

The win helped the Cubs improve to 20-2-1-1 overall and in defeat, the Voodoos fell to 10-9-0-3.
