A handful of North Bay & District Trappers AAA teams headed south this past weekend to take in their first tournament action of the year in Peterborough.
U15 AAA Trappers
The Dave’s Heating and Cooling U15 Trappers opened their season last weekend in Peterborough at the Boston Pizza Icefest Tournament.
The Trappers opened with a loss to the host Pete’s 7-3. Trapper goals were scored by Bryden Shank, Brant Romaniuk and Briir Long. Long, Hudson Prisco-Duquette and Andre Mondoux each had assists. The Trappers then fell to the Clarington Toros 3-2 in OT. Goals were scored by Mason Rotondo and Shank.
Next up was a tilt with the Upper Canada Cyclones, the Trappers fell 2-0 in possibly their most complete effort of the weekend, to a very good Cyclones team. Trappers certainly had opportunities to score however, the Upper Canada goalie closed the door.
Then, in a rather uninspired effort, the Trappers fell 5-1 to the Hamilton Huskies with Long picking up the lone Trapper goal.
The Trappers got in the win column with 2-0 shutout performance by goaltender Jackson Curran. Trapper goals were scored by Simon Toupin and Jackson Culin. Rotondo’s and Prisco-Duquette each had assists.
In their final game of the weekend, the Trappers lost a tough game to the Thunder Bay Kings 4-3. The Trappers played a solid game and almost came back in dramatic fashion however, a disallowed goal spoiled the opportunity to send the game to overtime. Owan Heroux was solid between the pipes vs Thunder Bay.
Will Hanselman, Shank and Long (1G,1A) scored goals for the Trappers while Rotondo also had a helper.
The U15 Trappers open their league play at home this weekend against the Sudbury Nickel Capitals. Games are Saturday at 1 p.m. at MG and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Powassan.
The Saturday game will be followed by the Noah Dugas jersey retirement celebration.
U14 AAA Trappers
The U14 Trappers hit the ice in Peterborough this weekend. Game one resulted in a 6-2 loss to the Oshawa Generals.
Aydin Beharie opened the scoring with a pass from Ben Brunton. Sam Rivet brought the team closer with a beautiful goal from Brunton and Michael Dech. Carson Ruddy made 41 saves.
Game two found the Trappers down 6-1, with Michael Dech scoring the lone goal. Terry Bradley made 41 saves.
The Trappers were blanked by the Eastern Ontario Wild in game 3, with Carson Ruddy making an incredible 59 saves. Game four vs the Southern Tier Admirals resulted in a 6-2 loss. Ben Brunton opened the scoring by tipping in a perfect shot from Sam Rivet at the point. This power play goal was generated by a pass to Rivet from Dech. Hugh Bouley picked up the second goal from line mates Ethan Roy and Mason Fike. The final game saw the Trappers facing off against the Nickel City Sons.
The Trappers fell 3-0, closing the gap between the two northern Ontario rivals.
The U14 Trappers start their season next Saturday as they host the Sons at the Powassan Sportsplex.
