After a slow start to the season, the U15 girls have claimed their first medal of the season at the event held in Markham.
In their 1st game, they defeated Toronto Triple Threat 47-34. Seven of the 10 players hit the scoresheet with Angela Rodriquez leading the way with 11 points. Rayah Martin scored 8 while Janae Hardware and Katelyn Decook added 7 each.
Their next game was a real nail-biter with the Spartans pulling out an exciting 34-32 victory. Carissa Ricci was dialed in from long distance hitting 4 trifectas all in the second half. She finished the game with 14 points. Hardware chipped in with 9 points and Rodriquez 7 points.
The Tournament had a team dropped out so they played an unbalanced tournament style. Their next game put them against Guelph Junior Gryphons who had won both of their games by over 50 points. The Spartans didn't back down against the very aggressive Junior Gryphons. They actually took an early lead in the game 7-6 only to see the Gryphons turn it on and lead at the half 47-15. The Spartans didn't back down and actually outscored Guelph 21-20. Final score 67-36. Vanessa Bourque and Rodriquez chipped in with 11 points each to lead the way.
In their final game, the Spartans faced IEM from Scarborough. Both teams had 2-1 records and the winner would claim the silver medal.
The Spartans had suffered an earlier loss IEM in an tournament game in Cambridge last month.
The Spartans trailed 16-12 at the end of the 1st quarter. Able to throw two solid lines at them the Spartans led at the half 31-27. The second half was all Spartans outsourcing their opponents 27-18 and coming away with a 58-45 victory. Carissa Ricci was once again dialled in scoring 17 points including 3 from long distance.
Rodriquez added 14 including 2 from 3 point land. Katelyn Decook and Mya Madigan added 6 points each. Kianna Desage, Paulina Moss and Maddie Feirerra were solid on the defensive end.
The Spartans continue their busy April with exhibition games in Kirkland and Sudbury the next two weeks before they hit the road heading to the OBA provincials April 27-29 in Durham.
