OUA Hockey: Split for Lakers men; road losses for Lakers women

Regular season wraps up for both teams next weekend.

It was a rare weekend for the Nipissing Lakers varsity women's hockey team as they dropped a pair of games on tthe road. 

On Friday night the Lakers fell 5-2 at the hands of the Waterloo Warriors. 

Abby Lunney and Maggie McKee scored for the Lakers in the contest.

On Saturday they continued their southwestern Ontario swing falling 2-1 to the Laurier Golden Hawks. 

Abby Lunney had the lone Lakers goal, while Chantelle Sandquist made 25 saves in the games.

Tha Lakers women return home to close out the regular season, hosting Guelph and Brock next weekend.

The two losses move the Lakers record to 15-9-2-2 good for 48 points which is now tied for top spot in the OUA East with U of T who are on a 9-1 run. 

Lakers men closing out on a high at home

The Nipissing Lakers varsity men's team earned a split in their final home games of the season this weekend. 

On Friday night the Lakers had a big second period as they took a 2-1 win from the visiting Lancers.  

The Lancers opened the scoring with the lone goal in the first and led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

In the middle frame, the Lakers potted a pair to jump ahead.

Charlie Johnson tied the game and Noah Vom Scheidt buried what turned out to be the game-winner late in the frame.

After two fasted-paced periods, the Lakers held a 2-1 lead.

The third was back and forth with both teams generating chances, but nothing came offensively for either team.

Zach Roy was strong in the Lakers net, making 35 saves, while the Lakers had 26 shots of their own.

Facing the Windsor Lancers once again Saturday, the Lakers put together another strong 60-minute effort, but came up short.

A comeback effort wasn’t enough, as the Lakers fell 3-2 to the Lancers.

After a scoreless first, the Lancers struck for three goals in the middle frame – two before the midway mark and one with about 30 seconds left in the frame.

The Lakers turned up the pressure in the third, scoring twice.

Payton Vescio got Nipissing back in the game, scoring with 10 minutes remaining to cut the deficit to two.

With just under two minutes to go, Charlie Johnson scored to make it a one-goal game.

Luke Strickland and Charles Farmer assisted on Vescio’s tally, while Devyn Mayea and Harrison Caines grabbed helpers on Johnson’s late goal.

Zach Roy made 35 saves in the game, while Nipissing had 39 shots of their own.

The Lakers (8-18-2-0) and 9th in the OUA West, are eliminated from playoff play, wrap up the regular season next weekend against TMU on the road.
