The North Bay Youth Volleyball Club - Lakers Rapids (13U) girls' team captured the Gold Medal at the Ontario Volleyball Association 6v6 McGregor Cup this past weekend. The team played in Maple Ontario, as part of the Trillium Division.
The Lakers were undefeated all day, not dropping one set the entire tournament. They were ranked 3rd going into the tournament and finished first in morning pool play 2-0. This led them to the crossover game where they defeated the Titans from the GTA in two straight sets.
In the semi-final game, the Lakers squared off against the Ottawa Valley Vikings Warriors. This was a tough match but the Lakers strong defence and incredible offence saw them come out on top in two straight sets. The Lakers continued to play strong in the final match and overtook the Northern Chill Heat Wave from Sudbury in two sets to win the gold medal.
With this win, the team will now move up to Championship Division.
"The girls had an incredible day.” Said Michelle Georgiev, Lakers Rapids Head Coach, “They played tough defence, ran a smart offence and were absolutely unstoppable. They stayed calm under pressure, maintained their focus, and worked so well together to achieve their success".
