The Wallace Klein Partners in Law Minor Pee Wee AA came home from Sault-Ste-Marie with the Red Matlby Memorial Trophy this past Sunday. They are now the NOHA’s minor Pee Wee AA champions after a near perfect weekend.

In round robin play, they defeated the Soo Peewee Pro Shop by the score of 10-2 in their first game and in the second game, they finally beat the Nickel City Jr Sons 3-2. The only game the team didn’t win all weekend was versus the Copper Cliff Redmen, a game that finished in a 2-2 tie.

The last game of the round robin was to determine who finished first overall. The Trappers came away with a 4-1 victory over the Sault Minor Jr Greyhounds in a tightly contested matchup of two fairly even teams.

In the semi-final, the Trappers shut out Soo Peewee Pro Shop by the score of 6-0. The team kept total control of the game, giving up very few chances to their opponents.

In the final, the Sault Minor Jr Greyhounds were ready for a rematch after their loss in round robin play. They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the Trappers scored three unanswered goals, the last one in an empty net to seal the championship in a 3-1 victory.

Goaltender Owen Smith was sharp for the Trappers as he was named the Game MVP in the final.

“It is a very satisfying weekend,” said Trappers head coach Trevor Scott.

“We played our most consistent hockey of the season at the right time. Giving up only 8 goals in 6 games shows the commitment of our players to the system we put in place. Our goaltending was tremendous and our defencemen did a very good job overall. We got timely scoring from every line. Before every game, in the dressing room, we felt like the boys meant business. They had their game faces on! It was a total team effort.”
