The Nipissing Lakers women's varsity women's hockey league continues to roll.

Maggie McKee scored 58 into overtime to give the Lakers a 3-2 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues at Memorial Gardens on Sunday afternoon.

However, it was not easy.

It took a late-game comeback to even force the extra time.

In a fast-paced opening period, the teams combined for 21 shots – 13 by the Lakers – but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Three minutes into the second period, the Lakers finally broke through and made it 1-0.

Ashlyn Zaharia recovered a loose puck and shoveled it into the net to give the Lakers the advantage, with the lone assist going to Lana Duriez.

Toronto tied the game late in the period and sent the teams to the second intermission all tied up at 1-1.

Shots were even as well, reading 18-18 through 40 minutes.

The Blues would take the lead in the third before the Lakers provided some dramatics late in the contest.

As the Lakers signaled to pull the goalie, Katie Chomiak continued her outstanding season, burying her 10th of the season to tie the game with 1:25 left in the third.

Maggie McKee grabbed the assist on the tying goal.

After great chances at both ends, a line change sprung McKee who made no mistake, snapping home the game-winner to give the Lakers the victory.

Chantelle Sandquist was back between the pipes for Nipissing, finishing with 30 saves, while the Lakers had 29 shots of their own on the Blues net.

The Lakers are now off until January when they’ll continue the OUA regular season as they go into the break with a near flawless 14-1 record and first place in the OUA East.
