It’s safe to say – even though it’s obvious – that the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team is rolling.

The Lakers made it three wins in a row, thanks to two more road wins this past weekend, as they defeated Laurier 3-2, before topping Waterloo 3-1.

Three straight goals, including two in the third period gave Nipissing a come-from-behind victory Saturday over Laurier and had the team hold on to their momentum they earned from the previous weekend.

After trailing 1-0 after one and 2-1 after two, which also included a 2-0 deficit, the Lakers scored three goals in a row to claim the win.

Sam Strassburger got things going, scoring in the second period to cut the deficit in half.

Myriam Latraverse scored her first OUA goal in the third period to tie the game and Bronwyn Bolduc continued her strong season, scoring the winner later in the period.

Bolduc also added an assist, while Kaley Tienhaara had two helpers and Kaitlyn McManus picked up an assist as well.

Jackie Rochefort made 27 saves in the victory, with the Lakers holding a 37-29 advantages in shots on goal.

Sunday, it was the story of special teams, as the Lakers and Warriors combined for 44 penalty minutes on 22 penalties, but neither team managed a goal with the man-advantage.

Instead, perfect penalty killing and goals from Laura McKenzie, Jetta Derenoski’s first OUA goal and an insurance marker by Kaitlyn McManus gave Nipissing the win.

McKenzie opened the scoring in the first and the 1-0 lead stood until the third period when Waterloo tied the game.

Nipissing responded with two goals, however, including the winner Derenoski to pick up the three points and their seventh victory in eight games.

Rochefort was strong again, making 25 saves for her seventh win of the year.

Next up for Nipissing is a match-up with their Northern Rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs, as the 705 Challenge Cup continues.

The Lakers will head to Sudbury on Saturday to take on the Vees in their first of two meetings this season.

Following Saturday’s game, the Lakers finish the first semester off with three straight home games, Nov. 18, 19 and 26.

But until then, a fifth straight game away from home is on the Lakers radar.

Banged up Lakers Men fall to Pats

It has been a tough start to the season for the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team and they don’t seem to be catching any breaks, either.

The Lakers, who haven’t had a completely healthy lineup at any point this season, dropped their fourth straight Saturday in Quebec, as the UQTR Patriotes upended the Lakers 7-2.

"The results are not there what we hoped for, but at the same time if we look deeper and find that we have played with up to 5 regulars out of every game, that has definitely contributed," noted Head Coach Mike McParland about the setback.

Nipissing stuck around for the first period, but UQTR’s depth proved to be too much and along with four power play goals, ended up sinking the Lakers.

Both teams came out flying in the first period, as they combined for five goals and 24 shots in the opening 20 minutes.

UQTR opened the scoring, but Colin Campbell scored twice in 20 seconds to give Nipissing a 2-1 lead.

That advantage was short-lived, however, as the Patriotes tied the game 20 seconds after that and added a third goal before the period ended.

They would add three more in the second and another in the third to claim the victory over the Lakers.

Erik Robichaud picked up an assist in the game, while Jeremy Pominville and Domenic Graham split the duties in net, with Pominville playing the first two periods, before Graham finished the game in the third.

Nipissing will look to get back on track this weekend when they hit the road once again and head to Ryerson and Toronto Friday and Saturday.

Following those two road games, the Lakers finally return to home ice on Nov. 18 and 19, as they host RMC and Carleton.

Currently in ninth place in the East Division, the Lakers will look to get things on track as soon as possible, as they head towards the end of the first semester, with six games left on the schedule before the break.
