Lakers duo come home with silver from FISU Winter World University Games

Team Canada fell 2-1 in overtime to Czechia in the gold medal game.

It was a day of heartbreak for Lakers Malory Dominico and Madison Desmarais. 

The two Nipissing Lakers varsity women's hockey team players who are on Team Canada's women's team fell 2-1 in overtime to Czechia in the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games gold medal game which faced off at 2 p.m. on Monday at the event in Torino, Italy. 

Anna Vanickova scored the golden goal for Czechia on a two on one with 3:39 left in the first overtime during three-on-three overtime. 

The two Lakers forwards had solid individual performances wearing the Maple Leaf. Madison Desmarais finished the event with five goals and four assists for nine points in five games at the tournament. 

Malory Dominico finished the event with one goal and three assists good for 4 points in five games. 

The tournament started off with a pair of blowouts as Team Canada blasted Chinese Taipei 16-0 to open the tournament on Saturday, January 11. Then on Monday, January 13, they humbled Great Britian 14-0. 

The Canadians finished off the round robin portion of the event with a 6-2 win over Slovakia setting up a semi-final match against Japan on Saturday, January 18.

The Canadians pulled out a 3-0 win in the semi-final to secure a spot in Monday's gold medal game against Czechia. 

It is the second tournament in a row that Lakers are coming home with hardware from the FISU Winter World University Games. 

Back in 2023, Lakers star Maria Dominico brought home gold from that event which was held in Lake Placid, New York.
