Jan Shulman Deadlift Challenge still looking for lifters

Jan Shulman, the current world powerlifting champion, has agreed to be the honorary chairperson of event and is urging athletes of all ages to participate.

The inaugural Jan Shulman Deadlift Challenge will take place at the YMCA this Sunday, November 27th. Entry is open to anyone fourteen years of age and over, who would like to test their maximum lift in a controlled setting with qualified officials. The entry fee will be $20.00 per lifter with all the money going to the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign.

Jan Shulman, the current world powerlifting champion, has agreed to be the honorary chairperson of event and is urging athletes of all ages to participate. Shulman, a member of the local Valhalla team, won the gold medal for Canada at the International Powerlifting Federation’s World Championship held in Kileen, Texas in July. She topped the field in the 52 kilo (114 lb)  Master 4 Age Category (70 years plus). As part of her total Jan set a new world record in the deadlift with a mark of 93 kilos (205 lbs).

For the deadlift challenge there will be three age categories for males and females: Juniors – 14 to 19 years.Open –20 to 39 years. Masters – 40 years and over.

In addition to the age and gender groupings, athletes will be further divided - according to experience- into Novice or Veteran divisions. A veteran is anyone who has previously entered a sanctioned powerlifting or weightlifting contest; a novice is any first- time lifter. All lifters will be given four attempts.

The schedule has now been set for the contest. Master lifters will register from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and take to the platforms at 10 a.m.. Open aged lifters will go at 12:00 noon and their registration hour is 10:00 to 11 a.m. The event will end with the junior grouping starting at 2 p.m. Junior lifters should report for registration from noon until 1:00 p.m.

This fundraiser is a collaborative effort of the Valhalla Powerlifting Club, the Norsemen and Valkyries Weightlifting team, and the students of Canadore College’s Strength and Sport Conditioning program
