Team Canada used a stifling forecheck and held the unbeaten Finns off the score sheet as Team Canada defeated Finland 2-0 in the Gold Medal today at the World Championships in Moscow.

North Bay's Mike Yeo, who was fired as head coach of the Minnesota Wild in February, is an assistant coach with Team Canada.

Connor McDavid scored midway through the first period to give Canada the 1-0 lead and former Battalion star Matt Duchene iced the victory with a late empty net goal.

It's the second straight gold medal for Team Canada at the World Championships.

For North Bay's Mike Yeo, the victory gives him a World Hockey Championship along with a Stanley Cup ring which he won as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2009.

Ironically, Yeo shares his gold medal moment with Wild defenceman Matthew Dumba and defeated a Finnish team which was led by Wild stars Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund.

Canada lost only once in the tournament and that was a 4-0 loss to Finland in the final game of the preliminary round.

The last North Bayite to win gold at the World Hockey Championships was defenceman Craig Rivet who captured gold with Team Canada in the spring of 2003.
