It was a great night for Nipissing Lakers varsity men's and women's hockey teams as both captured victories Friday night.
The Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team (3-10) pulled out of last place in the OUA West with a much-needed win over the now last place Laurier Golden Hawks 4-1 on Friday night at Memorial Gardens.
The Lakers scored four straight goals to grab the victory after Laurier opened the scoring in the first period.
Lakers forward Chad Denault tied the game shortly after the game’s opening goal to send the teams to the first intermission tied 1-1.
David Campbell earned the lone assist on the goal.
The Lakers tallied twice in the second, with Campbell scoring the eventual game-winner and Kyle Foreman adding his fifth of the year less than two minutes later.
Denault, Tyson Tomasini, Charles Farmer and Charlie Johnson all grabbed helpers in the middle frame.
In the third, Noah Vom Scheidt buried his first career OUA goal, sealing the win for the Lakers.
Jonathan Rees had the assist on the fourth and final Lakers goal.
Reece Proulx finished with 21 saves in the win, while the Lakers pepper the Laurier net, firing 43 shots of their own.
The same two teams are back on the ice Saturday night to wrap up their weekend series here in North Bay.
Game time is 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
Duriez leads Lakers women to road win
The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team stayed hot with a 3-1 road win over the Guelph Gryphons tonight.
Lana Duriez had two goals and Emma Thomas added a single for the Lakers, while Chantelle Sandquist finished with 26 saves in the win.
The win keeps the Lakers on top in the OUA East with an impressive 8-1 record.
The Lakers wrap up their weekend against the Brock Badgers Saturday evening in St. Catharines.
