Gwendolyn Ethel Wright (née Spracklin) passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024, at Casselholme Nursing Home in North Bay at the age of 89. Known fondly by friends, family, and colleagues as Gwen, she was a devoted nurse clinician, committing herself to every aspect of medical care at the Civic and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Known for her pioneering spirit, Gwen played an instrumental role in establishing North Bay’s first palliative care hospice, where she also dedicated countless hours as a volunteer. Her strength of character and wisdom left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know her.
Gwen’s life was a testament to resilience and compassion, qualities that shone through in her work and her relationships. Though she sometimes had a straightforward and reserved manner, those who knew her well admired her calm, caring nature, her resourcefulness as a nurse, and her quick wit. Gwen had a unique gift for forming deep, lasting connections, offering guidance and comfort to many during times of uncertainty or hardship. Her presence brought a sense of solace to everyone around her. Gwen’s colleagues admired her as an intelligent and critical thinker well ahead of her time, and she readily shared the fruits of her learning with those around her.
At home, Gwen was a beloved Nanny and grandma to Tara (Greg), Ben (Sylvia), Wesley, Hannah, Grace, and Noah. Her great-grandchildren, Avery and Emily, adored her visits, spending time together baking, reading and singing. She bore significant personal hardships with quiet strength, never one to complain or express self-pity. After retiring, Gwen spent her winters in Gulfport, Florida, where she thrived within a retirement community near the beach, finding warmth and companionship. Whether reciting poetry from memory or imparting the wisdom she had gathered through a lifetime of curiosity, she was a cherished source of insight and humor for her family, friends, and co-workers.
Born to Clinton and Elizabeth Spracklin of Brigus, Newfoundland, Gwen was predeceased by her husband, Ronald John, her daughter Shelley, her son Andrew David, her brother David, and her sisters Bernice Bishop and Mona Efford. She leaves behind her son Gus Wright (Ingrid), daughter Lynn Thomas, and sister Charlotte Morgan (Wayne), as well as countless friends and loved ones who will continue to celebrate her legacy of kindness, resilience, and dedication.
Many thanks to the caregivers on Cherry Lane at Casselholme in North Bay, Ontario. The exceptional care and compassion they provided made a significant difference in Gwen’s life, and we are deeply grateful for the warmth and comfort you brought to her.
