July 27, 1929 – Figline, Calabria, Italy -
February 20, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta, Canada

It is with great sadness that the family of Elvira Spina of Calgary, Alberta announce her passing on February 20, 2025 at the age of 95 years.

Elvira was born in Figline Vegliaturo, Calabria, Italy, on July 27, 1929. She married Edward Spina (d. 2008) at the age of 18 in Figline, before moving to Canada in 1948, where they had three sons, Fred, Frank, and Robert. Their final move was to Calgary in 2006 to be closer to their sons and grandchildren.

Elvira and Edward were well known in the North Bay community, operating many businesses during their 60 years together. These included a variety of restaurants (including a deli, pizza shops, and a Chinese food restaurant), a convenience store, motels, and several apartment buildings.

Elvira completed her RNA training and many language courses at Canadore College, and was fluent in several languages. Not only did she provide translation services for many new immigrants in North Bay for court appearances, hospital and doctor appointments, the Spinas together sponsored many Italians immigrating to Canada.

She was an avid traveller covering five continents, with many stories to tell ranging from riding an elephant in Thailand, to walking the Great Wall of China, to riding a camel in Morocco. Most of her travels included one or more of her sons or grandchildren.

Elvira was well known for her gardening, winning Horticultural Society awards for her colourful flower displays, and reaping the rewards of her plentiful vegetable gardens. She was also well known for her amazing cooking, including her famous homemade pasta and sausage.

Elvira Spina is survived by her sons, Fred (Sue) and Frank (Patricia) of Calgary, AB, and Robert (Jill) of East Ferris, ON; eight grandchildren (Melissa, Edward, Justin, Erica, Carla, Maria, Sylvia and Julia) and 9 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband Edward Spina, sisters Ida and Adelina Cristiano, and sisters Rita, Melarosa and brother Sinabaldo Carbone.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the CNIB or Alberta Health Services.
