SMITH, Stephen 'Hugh'

Hugh Smith died peacefully, with his family by his side, on Sunday, October 25, 2015, at North Bay Regional Health Centre. He was in his 67th year. Hugh was the cherished son of Elinor Smith of Powassan and the late Ward Smith; and the dear brother of Tim Smith (Sherrill) of Chisholm. Uncle Hugh will be lovingly remembered by his niece Krisha (Rob) and nephew Jesse (Lauren). Hugh will be greatly missed by his beloved cats.  Hugh was a well known and respected school teacher who used his retirement years to the betterment of his community. He served as Powassan’s first and only Town Crier, was formerly a reporter with The Almaguin News, was chief volunteer at the Powassan United Church bookstore, was an entertaining member of Powassan Players, was an enthusiastic gardener who opened his home to visitors on many Powassan Horticultural Society garden tours, volunteered at Eastholme Home for the Aged and was organist at Chisholm United Church for 44 years. Hugh was often seen driving about town in his favourite toy – his 1953 Willys Jeep, top down and having a ball! The Smith family will receive visitors at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at Paul Funeral Home on Friday, October 30 at 2:00 pm. Cremation will be followed by interment of ashes at Boxwell Cemetery at a later date.
