August 30, 1926 to November 9, 2023

In his 98th year, Gilbert passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of November 9, 2023 leaving an empty space in our hearts and lives. Gil was one of nine children born to Mathew and Alice Small. A loving husband and “Hero” to his wife of 41 years, Nancy Small (Brandt). Gil is survived by his brother John Small, and his sisters Sheila Bond, Esther Romaniuk, and Leona Mack. Dearly loved by his step children Jody (Kathleen), Jeanie, and Jeffrey (Chrissy), his five step grandchildren.

A talented guitar player and singer, Gil, his sister Esther, and his brother, Hubert (who played steel guitar) had a live radio show in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in the 1950’s. The band was well known as the North Star Ramblers, and often featured other family members on the show, including brothers John, Lionel and Ken. Always a true entertainer, Gil loved to play his Gibson guitar and sing a few tunes from the over 400 songs he had memorized.

Gil was an entrepreneur and businessman. He built a successful career with integrity, honesty, and hard work. He always took pride in his appearance and was rarely seen without his suit and tie, and his now famous fedora hat. He was described as “a true gentleman….a rare breed of men you don’t see these days”.  He had a kind and generous heart and loved his family and everyone he met.

We will miss his smile, his enthusiasm for life, his music, his kindness, his unconditional love, and the bright light Gil brought to our family. We love you Gilbert. Until we meet again…..❤️

At Gilbert’s request there will be no service and cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be arranged.

A random act of kindness in memory of Gilbert would be appreciated.
