Our dear mother and grandmother died peacefully, after a heroic battle with cancer, at the Algonquin Nursing Home, Mattawa, on Wednesday, September 28, 2005. Predeceased by her father and mother, Colonel Feodor and Valentina Petschersky, husband Dr. S.F. Monestime and son Fedia. Zena is survived by her children Vala (Wayne Belter), Mattawa; Yura (Cindy Boston), North Bay; and Sasha (Sharon), Stouffville; grandchildren Katya, Sasha, Misha, Nikolai, Tatyana, Natalia and Adriana. Affectionately called Nana and Mrs. M, by all who knew her, she emigrated from Danzig to Canada with her mother in 1949 and has called Mattawa home for the last 52 years. Zena and Dr. Monestime built the Algonquin Nursing Home in 1976, and she has been the heart and driving force behind "The Place Called Home" ever since. Nana has left her family with a strong Russian heritage and sense of family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her nursing home family of residents and staff, and her dear friend Rose. The family will receive friends at the Monestime home, 407 Valois Drive, Mattawa, today, Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Russian Orthodox funeral service will be celebrated by Reverend Father Vyacheslav Davidenko at St. Anne's Church, Mattawa, on Monday, October 3, at 1:30 p.m. If desired, donations to the charity of your choice would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the T.L. Smith Funeral Home, Mattawa, 744-0300.
