With the love of his family at his side Kenneth passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024, at the Nipissing Serenity Hospice, at the age of 75 years. Beloved and devoted husband of Sally (nee Robinson) Miller. Loving father of Stacey Miller (Jeff Seguin) and Sarah Miller (Stephen Melnyck and son Kayl Melnyck). Cherished grandfather of Griffin, Anna and Gracie. Kenneth was predeceased by his parents Christian and Lucy (nee Levesque) Miller and his sister Shirley Miller (Mike Grace -surviving). He is survived by his brother Godfrey Miller (Lucie), and his sisters Carol Miller and Laurie Belanger (Claudio).
Kenneth had a distinguished career with the OPP starting in Hearst in 1976. In 1980, Ken became a member of the Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) in North Bay and returned to general duties at the North Bay Detachment in 1984. In 1994, Ken joined the North Bay DHQ Crime Unit. In 1995, Ken was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant. In 1999, Ken was promoted to the rank of Detective Inspector and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Branch (North Bay). In 2002, Ken was promoted to Superintendent, Regional Director of Operations for North East Region (NER). In 2006, Ken was promoted to Chief Superintendent, Regional Commander (NER). Chief Superintendent Ken Miller retired from the OPP in 2008, following over 31 years of service.
Ken is well-known and respected by members of the Ontario Hockey Federation, the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and the Ontario Hockey League for his dedicated work as a referee, referee in chief and for his years of executive service. Ken was an on-ice hockey official for 32 years including local, regional, provincial, national and international contests. He was a regular official in the Ontario Hockey League for a decade and in 1988 was assigned to work the World “C” Championships in Australia, where he handled the title match. Off ice, Ken was a national certified supervisor and instructor having attained level 6 certification; the highest level in amateur hockey. He has served the NOHA as Executive Director of officials and referee in chief of the Ontario Hockey Federation for 11 years. Ken held numerous position with the OHL including supervisor, Director of Security and served as a member of the referee’s committee. For his efforts in mentoring numerous officials over a number of decades, Ken was named Hockey Canada’s Official of the Year in 2007 as well as recognition from both the OHF and the NOHA. He was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
The family will receive visitors at the Memorial Gardens -North Bay Sports Hall of Fame (100 Chippewa Street West, North Bay) on Friday, January 12, 2024, between the hours of 10 am and 12 noon. A Memorial Service will be conducted at the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame, by Deacon Tim Foster, O.P.P Chaplain, and Mr. Dave Saad at 12 noon. A celebration of Ken’s life will follow. Donations are suggested to the Nipissing Serenity Hospice and would be gratefully acknowledged by his family.
