Dave McLellan Obituary
Oct 1, 1956 - March 12, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that David McLellan passed away on March 12th, 2023, surrounded by people who love him.
Dave is survived by his wife Sue McLellan (nee Shillinglaw), his children Kristi (Marc), Laurie (Kat), Ashley, and Karen (Max), his grandchildren Felix, Khloe, Juno, and Walker, his mother Evelyn McLellan, and brothers John (Pam) McLellan and Bill McLellan. He will be missed by his many beloved nieces, nephews and siblings-in-law. He is predeceased by his father Lyle McLellan, and his brothers Paul, Peter, Michael, and Mark.
Dave was born in Pembroke, but grew up in North Bay, ON.
His love of hockey began in his youth, and could often be found playing shinny at Police Playground as a kid. He went on to referee minor hockey and eventually became a highly respected linesman in the Ontario Hockey League.
Dave started as a reporter at the North Bay Nugget in the late 70s and worked his way up to Editor in the early to mid-90s.
He then left journalism, and Dave and Sue opened their first Tim Hortons franchise in Deep River in 1997. They moved on shortly after and ended up with 5 stores in Markham. He spent the last 25 years in the Stouffville/Uxbridge area, where he continued to play hockey, pool, and golf with his many friends. He was also very involved in the Stouffville-Markham Girls Hockey Association, where he coached teams that two of his children played on.
He loved fishing up at the camp on Boyce Lake for hours alone, with his headphones on extra loud and a Blue Light in hand.
Anyone who spent any time with Dave was treated to a joke or 10, and a good laugh (or groan).
Though the last 3.5 years were difficult after a spinal cord injury, he still made us laugh daily.
He was an amazing partner, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, and we are all lucky to have had him in our lives.
Celebration of Life will take place at the Stouffville Legion on Sunday, April 2nd from 2 pm-6 pm.
In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Dave’s name to Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, or the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program.
