It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Geoffrey Michael Laplante, an extraordinary soul who departed from this world on July 8th, 2023, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know him. At the age of 56, Geoff bid farewell, leaving behind cherished memories and an enduring legacy.

Geoff will forever remain in the hearts of his adoring daughters, Zaffia, Zeyana, and Olivia, who deeply mourn his absence. He was also a source of immense joy and pride to his beloved parents, Barbara and Daniel, and his siblings, Chris (Teresa) and Jill (Rick).

The void left by Geoff's departure extends far and wide, reaching his nieces and nephews, Dylan, Christopher (Julianna), Jaydan (Kyle), Alexis (Nathan), as well as numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles across the nation. His absence resonates deeply with each of them, a testament to the profound impact he had on their lives.

Geoff embodied the essence of a loving father, son, brother, and friend, radiating a zest for life that touched the hearts of all fortunate enough to cross his path. His unwavering dedication to selflessly give everything he had to others will forever be etched in our collective memory. Be it a comforting smile, a captivating story, a helping hand, or a compassionate ear, Geoff's acts of kindness and generosity were a constant source of inspiration.

Although Geoff's physical presence may be absent, his spirit will forever endure, serving as a guiding light and a reminder of the boundless capacity for love and compassion. We find solace in the cherished memories we shared with him and take comfort in the knowledge that his impact will continue to resonate within us.

In this time of profound loss, let us remember Geoff as a remarkable soul who left an indelible imprint on our lives. May his memory be a source of strength and inspiration as we navigate the days ahead, keeping alive the spirit of love and generosity that defined his remarkable journey.

Geoff was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario. He attended Scollard Hall, the University of Waterloo, and Queen’s University where he studied law and was called to the Bar in 1987.  He practiced law in North Bay until his passing. Geoff was passionate about the law and possibly just as passionate about football and canoe/kayak. As a young man, he played OUA football at Waterloo and Queen’s and he enjoyed many years as an elite paddler with the North Bay Canoe Club. His three daughters carried on this passion for canoeing and football with the full support of their biggest fan, their father. His booming voice will be missed in the gridiron bleachers and at the summer canoe regattas. His support for the next generation of athletes is his greatest accomplishment and his lasting legacy.

Geoff loved the people of North Bay and especially enjoyed supporting others who needed assistance to enjoy the many gifts and opportunities that our city provided to him and his family. Thank you, Geoff, your generosity of time, resources and hard work have made our community a better place for all.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Martyn Funeral Home in North Bay from  2 p.m. –  4 p.m. as well as 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, and on behalf of the Laplante Family, a GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money that will go towards supporting Indigenous youth in the North Bay community to participate in paddling programs at the local canoe club and support female participation in North Bay’s football league — two initiatives Geoff was passionate about.
