The family announces with great sorrow the passing of Vito Battigaglia. Vito passed away peacefully at Eastholme Home for the Aged on Sunday December 11, 2016 at the age of 88 years. Beloved husband for 54 years to Maria (nee Barberio). Vito will be greatly missed by his children; Marisa (Andy), Josie (Rob) and Nick (Michelle). The grandchildren Sierra, Kayla, Chris, Emma and Julia will miss their Nonno and his funny stories very much. Vito is survived by his sister; Catarina Bruno (late Vincenzo) of North Bay and Vincenzo Battigaglia (Rosa) of Woodbridge. Missed by many nephews, nieces, family, friends locally and in Italy and by his many business acquaintances. Vito was predeceased by his parents; Nicola and Marietta Battigaglia and his sister; Giuseppina (late Marino) Cozzini of Italy and his brother; Frank Battigaglia of North Bay. Vito was born in 1928 in Cutro, Catanzaro Italy. He immigrated to Canada in 1953, as a young man entering the country through the famous Pier 21 in Nova Scotia. He came to look for work and tried his hand at various trades over the next 8 years. Returning to Italy in 1962, Vito married Maria and brought her to Canada with him where they settled in North Bay. Once in North Bay, Vito worked for Standard Paving where he found his niche in the concrete business. After many years with Standard Paving, Vito decided to go into business for himself and thus Battano Construction was born in 1975. Dad was an avid Gardener he loved his grape vines, he was a sausage maker and wine maker. Vito also loved his soccer teams especially Juventus and Italy. The family will receive family, visitors and friends at the McGunity Funeral Home (North Bay) on Wednesday December 14 from 2pm - 4pm and 7pm - 9pm. A mass will be held at the Pro Cathedral of the Assumption on Thursday December 15 at 10am. Entombment at All Saints Mausoleum will follow. A heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses who cared for our dad and especially Dr Wendy Graham and the caring nurses in B1 at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
