SHEFFIELD — A man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of player Adam Johnson during a professional hockey game in England has had his bail extended, South Yorkshire Police said Monday.

Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said in a statement that the investigation into Johnson's death remains ongoing.

Johnson's neck was fatally cut by opponent Matt Petgrave's skate during an Elite Ice Hockey League game in Sheffield, England, on Oct. 28, 2023.

Johnson, 29, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His team, the Nottingham Panthers, had described it as a "freak accident."

On Nov. 14, 2023, South Yorkshire Police arrested a man but have not released his name or age. His bail has now been extended to Jan. 20.

The Panthers plan to hold a jersey retirement ceremony for Johnson's No. 47 on Dec. 14.
