Ana Hill is hoping the fourth time is a charm.

The grade 12 student from Widdifield Secondary School, is hoping her regional science fair project is a practical project that will catch the eyes of the judges.

“My project is about finding a coating that can go on eggs to preserve them over the course of four weeks, and this is an alternative to refrigerating eggs since refrigeration can be expensive and it can take up space with eggs. So it is better for the environment if you keep eggs on a shelf rather than in the fridge,” explained Hill.

Hill says she put more than four weeks of hard work putting the project together.  She was among dozens of area students participating in the regional science fair that took place today at the Robert Surtees Athletic Centre on the campus of Nipissing University.

Andrew Weeks is the Chief Judge for the regional event.  He believes originality is the key.

“Is it different is it new, could it be something someone at a university would be interested in doing,” he said.

“Often the students will pair up with people  like that and they will get all sorts of new ideas and try something amazing.”

Hill hopes her project helps her as she hopes to study Kinesiology in University next year.

“There will be a lot of research projects and there is going to be a lot of explaining and coming up with labs such as this one so since I have been in science fairs there has been a lot of preparation for next year,” he said.

Five of the top students at today’s event will be awarded an opportunity to attend the Canada-Wide Science Fair 2019 to be held in Fredericton, NB the week of May 11 to May 17.
