Where are the worst roads in northern Ontario? CAA wants to know

Last year In the north, the roads in the poorest conditions were Third Avenue West in North Bay, Tokio Street, Thunder Bay and Barrydowne Road in Sudbury

Spring is here – and so are potholes, crumbling shoulders and cracked roads.

Another thing spring brings is the annual "Worst Roads Campaign" by the CAA.

Once again CAA is asking Ontario’s drivers, cyclists and runners to report the worst roads, so it can compile a report to share with municipal and provincial governments.

Worst Roads is a spring campaign that has measured public sentiment on the state of highways and non-highways since 2003. In Ontario, the campaign allows consumers to vote daily here.

Stats from the 2021 "Cost of Poor Roads in Canada Study" conducted for CAA shows 156,000km of poor and very poor roads in Canada. Canada has more than a million kilometres of roads.

In Ontario, we have 1068km of poor and very poor highways and 31,366km in non-highways. That’s a grand total of 32,434km of roads in pretty bad condition.

Close to 43 per cent of Canadian roads are rated below average.

Spending $1 on pavement preservation today eliminates or delays spending $6-$10 on costly rehabilitation or reconstruction in the future, says the CAA.

Votes for CAA’s Worst Roads can be cast at caaworstroads.com from March 22 until April 19th. Participants will be entered for a grand prize draw to win free gas for a year.

Once voting is closed, CAA will compile a list of the Top 10 Worst Roads in Ontario and the worst roads in regions across the province. The regional top five lists will help shine a light on the state of local roads in municipalities across Ontario.

CAA will present the list of 2022 Worst Roads to local and provincial officials to help inform future funding and planning decisions.

Where were last year’s worst roads and where will they be in 2022?
