Hockey teams are scrambling tonight with the news that the city has shut down West Ferris arena tonight for what they are calling a "mechanical failure."
The City sent out a press release late friday evening, noting that the concern has nothing to do with the snow load on the roof.
"In recent sampling of the brine solution contained in the chiller unit at the West Ferris arena, ammonia was detected. Since that time increased sampling frequency was initiated," the release stated.
"The last sample analyzed had an increase of ammonia in the brine solution.
"Sampling and routine monitoring of the chiller unit has been in effect as well as consultations with the service contractor. Discussions with the equipment and service contractor and the City’s resources have been ongoing. In an abundance of caution, it has been decided that in the interests of the health and safety of our citizens and staff that the West Ferris arena be shut down."
The city, which is hosting the Northern Ontario Major Peewee AA championships which began today, is getting priority as games from that NOHA tournament scheduled at West Ferris are being moved to Pete Palangio arena.
“The City is working with our user groups to make accommodations to minimize inconvenience," advises Councillor Johanne Brousseau, Chair of Community Services,
City officials say the length of the shutdown will be determined early next week.
