Heavy rain is forecast for the next 24 ho We'reurs

One thing they say about rain...you don't need to shovel it.

While the North Bay area is under a heavy rainfall warning, Sudbury is under a winter storm warning with up to 15 cm possible.

Expect rainfall tonight into tomorrow morning with total amounts of 20 to 30 mm.

We might get a brief period of freezing rain on Thursday afternoon. The rain is expected to transition to snow on Thursday afternoon when some freezing rain is possible on Thursday afternoon as the rain transitions to snow. We'll see 1-3 cm.

There is still some uncertainty around the track of the low and when the colder air will push into the region. There still remains the possibility of a prolonged period of freezing rain, but the latest forecast models indicate that the threat should be rather short-lived.

Icy conditions may develop Thursday afternoon as temperatures drop to below the freezing mark.

The heavy rainfall warning is for:

  • North Bay - Powassan - Mattawa
  • West Nipissing - French River

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Just north of us, a winter storm warning is in effect for:

  • Greater Sudbury and vicinity
  • Temagami - Temiskaming Shores

A winter storm is expected beginning tonight with total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm possible.

Freezing rain with 2 to 5 mm of ice build-up is also possible beginning tonight and tapering off Thursday afternoon.

Rain is expected to push in over the region tonight or early Thursday morning and will transition to freezing rain or ice pellets mainly north of a line from Sudbury to Temagami.

North of this line is where the bulk of the ice build-up is expected.

South of this line, including Sudbury and Temagami, could see 20 to 30 mm of rain before a transition to snow Thursday morning. The area of freezing rain will gradually shift southward Thursday morning with snow pushing in behind it.

Snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected with locally up to 15 cm possible, again north of the line from Sudbury to Temagami. The position of this rain-snow transition line may still shift north or south which will affect exact precipitation amounts and types.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult in some locations. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
