Voodoos celebrate a 6-4 road win

A well-balanced attack saw the Powassan Voodoos pick-up goals from six different skaters in an eventual 6-4 triumph over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

The visiting Voodoos needed just over a minute to open the night’s scoring.

On the tally, they broke out with speed from their own zone and saw Lucas Gunner find Caden Dubreuil going to the net where he lifted a shot over the shoulder of Gold Miners’ starter Matis Bureau-Morel.

A dump in the Kirkland Lake goaltender could not contain led to a second Powassan marker as Owen Kahl snagged the loose puck and stuffed it into the open corner.

The home side got on the board when Trent Nobes darted down the left wing and used a power move to the crease to lift a backhand past goal keeper Tyson Wilcox.

A big rebound in the final minute of the frame left the Voodoos’ Samuel Rivet plenty of space to whip in his second marker of the season.

In the middle stanza, the Gold Miners got to within one as Alexander Sackett quickly buried a Nobes feed from behind the net.

They then drew level 23 seconds later as Matthew Diniz took a play wide left and patiently waited before roofing a shot on Wilcox for his first NOJHL goal.

Regaining the lead at 11:20, Mason Rontondo put Powassan back on top as they caught Kirkland Lake on a change as he redirected in a Caleb Dawson set-up on a two-on-one.

Adding to their edge, Heath Bradley spotted Cayden Kowal driving down the slot and saw him rip his chance into the right corner.

Spinning and scoring from a sharp angle, Nobes got the hosts closer with four and a half minutes to play.

However, Powassan pressured a turnover in the late going and saw Justin Rousseau stuff in a backhand at 18:17 to help secure the road victory.

The result sees the Voodoos improve to 8-5-0-2 on the year, while in defeat the Gold Miners fall to 2-14-0-2.
