The Powassan Voodoos fell to 0-3 at the Cottage Cup Showcase event in Wasaga Stars Arena dropping a pair of games today.

Riding the shutout goaltending of Leon Willerscheid and a two-goal effort from Awrelij Fomenko saw the Jungadler Mannheim Eagles top the Powassan Voodoos 3-0 Wednesday in Day 2 Wednesday afternoon.

Mannheim opened the scoring 2:47 in as Fomenko fired a shot from the right side that got through Powassan netminder Miles Gordon.

The German under-20 side added another nine minutes later after picking off a clearing attempt and setting up Fomenko in the slot, where he spun and buried his chance.

Tacking on another in the late going of the opening period, Dustin Willhoft redirected a point shot high over the shoulder of Gordon.

A tight final frame saw no more markers provided as Mannheim held firm to secure the victory.

Voodoos clipped by Flyers

Colton Smith collected the game’s first two goals as the Leamington Flyers (OJHL) went on to down the Powassan Voodoos 4-1 Wednesday morning at the Cottage Cup Showcase taking place at Wasaga Stars Arena.

Leamington began the scoring in the two-period affair, seven and a half minutes into the match-up.

On the tally, the Flyers forced a turnover, which allowed Smith to whip a shot from the slot high over the blocker of Voodoos’ starter Tyson Wilcox.

Smith then notched another midway through the first as he drove down the left wing, then cut around the net and proceeded to jam in a wraparound attempt.

A third in the session saw Leamington connect once more, with Brody Cook snapping in a shot from between the circles.

In the last frame, the Flyers extended their edge with a low Mason Landry marker sent between the legs of Wilcox.

Powassan got on the board, via the power play, in the late going when Nathan Pelletier sent a crisp feed across the crease to Adam McKillop who promptly snapped it past Leamington netminder Tre Altiman to cap off the scoring.

Powassan finishes round robin play at 0-3 and will now meet the Collingwood Blues (OJHL) Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. in quarter-final play.
